Known as a “chaise longue” which is the French word for chaise lounge. The French meaning translates into “long chair” and refers to the extra-long chair’s seat. A seat that is extra-long enough to support your legs while sitting down. The chair’s back is typically in a slightly reclining position. The design thought of the chaise was to offer a chair for relaxing or reading while sitting in a reclining position. Clever design! 

The history of the chaise lounge goes way back to the days of ancient Egypt. Used by the pharaohs in ancient Egypt times, the lounge symbolized wealth and elegance. The chair has been known by many names throughout history. Referred to by many names including a chaise, daybed, settee, fainting couch, lounge chair, and others as well. 

In the Victorian Era, the chair or fainting couch was used by well-to-do ladies of the time. It provided a place for the ladies to rest and an escape from the oppressive outdoor heat.

For interior use, the chaise lounge is available in several design styles. Most commonly seen is the double arm chaise lounge. This design has double arms as the name implies. An arm on each side of the lounge chair. Another design style is the one-arm chaise lounge chair. This chaise has a single arm either on the right or left side of the chaise. An open chaise lounge has no arms and lower sides at each end. Finally, there is an armless chaise lounge which is today’s topic for our post.
