  1. I live in Central Florida, rains alot in summer and lots of sand soil of course we have the high humidity what would be the best ground cover.

    1. Hi Linda, here are a few ground covers that may work for your garden conditions. Is central Florida zone 9? I’m guessing it is either 8 or 9.

Listed below are 4 ground covers, all 4 can be grown to zone 9 and tolerate sandy soil conditions.
      (1) Veronica Liwanensis Speedwell grows zones 4 to 9, mostly Sunny.
      (2) Ceratostigma Plumbaginoides (common names – plumbago, Leadwort) grows zones 5 to 9 mostly Sunny to shade
      (3) Geranium phaeum Samobor (common names – cranesbill, perennial geranium) grows in zones 4 to 9 in Sun to shade
      (4) Liriope muscari Big Blue (common name – Lilyturf, Monkey Grass) zones 5 to 10 in full Sun to shade

There are other perennials such as Sedum – Little Miss Sushine, and other perennial geraniums that could work as well.

If your hardiness zone is 8, there are a few more ground covers that you can consider such as Phlox stolonifera Home Fires (common name – Tufted Creeping Phlox) grows in zones 4 to 8 in full Sun to mostly shady.

The links that I included are for informational purposes, you can search for these ground covers at your local nursery in Florida. I included the links so that you can look at the images. If none of these perennials listed are options let me know and I can suggest other plants that may work for your garden conditions.

And thanks for reading our blog. Happy Gardening, Mary

    1. Hi Sherry,

I think that you might be thinking about plants that are sold as “Stepables”. Does that sound right? The link to the website is here –> Stepables website This company is a wholesale company, so you’ll need to search for a nursery that is close to you. There are also low growing plants that tolerate foot traffic such as Ajuga (Carpet Bugle), Thymus, Sedum (Stonecrop), and others. These can also be found in nurseries.

      – Hope this help you find what you are searching for.

  2. We are in zone 8b in north Florida. Our back yard will not grow grass. What ground cover do you recommend for clay, sandy, lousy soil, that doesn’t need mowing and can be walked on. We have a small dog that loves to run in the back yard and play with me too.
