- Ask your boss if you can work from home 1 or 2 days a week instead of working at the office
- Walk to work or ride your bike to work 1 or 2 days a week rather than driving to work
- Ride the bus, carpool, or take mass transportation to work 1 or 2 days a week rather than driving to work
- Teleconference to remote meetings rather than driving or flying to other geographical locations
- If you drive to work, use an air filter in your car that is reusable and clean it regularly
- If you drive to work, change your oil and oil filter regularly to increase your gas mileage
- If you drive to work, periodically check the air pressure in your tires so that they are the properly inflated to improve gas mileage
- Bring your lunch to work in a reusable lunch bag so you don’t buy food at work and reuse your lunch bag
- If you need to eat out during the lunch hour, walk to the restaurant instead of driving
- Eliminate the use of straws, plastic wrap, and plastic bags for a week, a month, or the remainder of the year.
- Use the stairs when you arrive to work in the morning, during the day, and when you leave for the day. Avoid using the elevators all together.
- Don’t print anything at work, try to read all documents online, avoid using paper
- Use energy-efficient coffee makers, microwave ovens, and other small appliances then turn-off and unplug at night and on the weekends
- Turn off all unused office lights, computers, or any other office equipment when not in use, at night and over the weekend
- Disconnect all non-essential appliances over the weekend
- Recommend to the office manager to use office lighting that is energy efficient and recommend they use LED lights; lower the temperature on the thermostat in the Winter and raise the temperature on the thermostat in Summer
- Recommend to the office manager that furnace and air conditioning filters be reusable rather than disposable and that filters be cleaned regularly
- Ask the office manager to verify that the office cleaning crew is using environmental friendly cleaning products, and that toxic chemicals are not being used to clean the office
- Encourage your co-workers, management, and staff to recycle all paper, glass, cans, and plastics every day of the year
- Organize a group of co-workers to clean a nearby park, river, or beach for Earth Day and repeat again over the Summer
- Recognize company employees that discover new or innovative ways to reduce energy at work or in the community
- Create your own Green Earth Day initiative to encourage others to participate in Celebrating Earth Day. Maybe consider challenging other neighboring businesses to clean nearby community parks, playgrounds, or beaches to celebrate Earth Day.
