8 Easy Steps to Planting a Tree: Step by Step Instructions for Planting a Tree Fast!
Once you have selected the right type of tree and the planting location of your new tree, you are ready to begin. It is best to follow the tree’s planting instructions. If the tree does not have planting instructions because it came from your yard elsewhere or a neighbor’s yard then my general tree planting instructions are as follows:
- Dig a hole the depth of the tree root system and twice the width of the existing tree root system.
- Mix equal amounts of topsoil, peat moss, and cow manure in a large container then pour about one half of the soil mixture into the freshly dug hole .
- Carefully place the tree in the hole and add the remaining soil mixture over the new tree root system.
- Pat down the soil mixture around the tree so that any air pockets are eliminated.
- Water thoroughly.
- The newly planted tree may need to be staked if the new tree is 5 or more feet tall or located in a high wind area.
- For the first year of the tree’s life, remember to water 1 to 2 times per week until the tree is well established. Skip watering the tree only if the tree received a substantial amount of rainfall during the week.
- Then sit back and watch your beautiful tree grow and mature!
Planting a tree with your children or grandchildren is a wonderful family activity. As the tree grows and matures, your children or grandchildren will take pride in knowing they helped plant the tree. Best of all, it is a great way to introduce your children and grandchildren to a lifetime love of gardening!
